Safety Tips When Using Your Firepit at Your Home

There’s nothing like gathering around a crackling firepit with friends and family. At Carter Thompson Insurance, we understand that these cherished moments also come with a responsibility to ensure safety. Firepit accidents can lead to injuries or property damage, but with a little care and attention, you can enjoy your firepit with peace of mind.  

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe while using your home firepit.  

• Keep your distance from structures. Place your firepit at least 10 feet away from your home or other buildings to reduce the risk of a fire spreading.

• Pay attention to surface selection. Set up the firepit on a nonflammable surface such as concrete or brick rather than grass or a wooden deck.

• Use proper fuel. Opt for dry, seasoned firewood as green or wet wood can cause excessive smoke and sparks. Don’t use gasoline or lighter fluid to start the fire as they can cause dangerous flare-ups.

• Invest in safety equipment. Use a spark screen to catch flying embers. Keep a fire extinguisher or hose nearby, ensuring it’s easily accessible in case of emergency.

• Supervise the fire. A responsible adult should constantly monitor the fire, never leaving it unattended. Establish a safe perimeter for children and pets to prevent accidental burns.

• Respect wind conditions. Strong winds can blow embers and create a fire hazard. If it’s a windy day, consider postponing your firepit plans.

• Check local ordinances. Ensure you are compliant with local laws regarding open fires and obtain any necessary permits.

• Extinguish the fire properly. Put out the fire with water or sand, ensuring it’s completely out before leaving the area. Allow ashes to cool completely before disposing of them in a metal container.
